  <title>Demartek SSD Deployment Guide 2012-Q2</title>
  <description>
  	Solid state storage is transforming the entire computing industry. Solid state storage has completely
  	revolutionized consumer electronics products, replacing spinning disk drives in virtually every category
  	of consumer devices. This same enthusiasm for solid state storage has moved into the data center. Because
  	of this interest, Demartek has produced this Demartek SSD Deployment Guide 2012-Q2, one in a series of
  	technology deployment guides. This guide covers NAND flash characteristics, SSD form factors, data placement
  	strategies and more.

  <title>Demartek Presents Solid State Storage Half-day Seminars 2012</title>
  <description>
  	In a relatively short time, solid-state storage has become a viable alternative for enterprise storage
  	applications. It offers far superior performance over magnetic media while using much less power and
  	creating little heat. Solid-state storage is, however, still considerably more expensive than spinning
  	disk, so a cost-effective approach to implementation is required. In this free, multi-city, half-day
  	seminar, Dennis Martin, President of Demartek will cover the key solid-state technologies and the specs

  <title>Demartek Low Latency Evaluation of Fibre Channel, iSCSI and SAS Host Interfaces</title>
  <description>
  	Block host interfaces, including Fibre Channel, iSCSI and SAS are all becoming increasingly
  	available for today’s storage systems. While high IOPS is frequently the metric for assessing
  	drive and array performance, in many cases latency is equally as important. For example, in
  	an OLTP	application, short response times are critical. A transaction may require many successive
  	queries to a database, where each query depends on answers returned from the previous query.
  	User response times are entirely dependent on how quickly storage can return answers to the
  	queries. We compared four block interface and speed combinations on the same storage system
  	for basic performance. These four host interfaces were 8Gb FC, 10Gb iSCSI, 1Gb iSCSI and
  	6Gb SAS. At first glance, one might assume that the interfaces with the highest line rates
  	would provide the best overall performance, but we found that this was not the case.

   	Storage networking rarely gets much attention, and it’s frequently overshadowed by the
   	server and storage gear it links together. But there’s renewed interest in storage networking
   	as new or enhanced technologies begin to show up in our data centers.
   	The complete article is available in the October 2011 edition of Storage Magazine.

  <title>Demartek Presents YouTube Video of Broadcom BCM957712-S 10Gb Ethernet/FCoE/iSCSI Offload Adapter</title>
  <description>
   Demartek evaluated the Broadcom BCM957712-S 10GbE adapter that supports FCoE with full hardward offload and
   iSCSI with full hardware offload. We were able to achieve approximately 1.7 million IOPS for FCoE random reads
   and more than 1 million IOPS for iSCSI random reads using the Broadcom BCM957712-S adapter. Broadcom has
   demonstrated very strong performance and good CPU efficiency when compared to both full-hardware-offload
   adapters and non-hardware-offload adapters.

  <title>Demartek Publishes Article on the Hyper-V P2V Conversion Process and Storage Considerations</title>
  <description>
   	There are various reasons why it may be necessary to convert physical systems directly into virtual
   	machines (VMs). Aging, out-of-warranty or failing hardware may necessitate such a migration, as may
   	the simple need to consolidate underutilized systems to reduce operating costs. It is certainly
   	possible to manually build guest VMs and migrate the applications and resources from the physical
   	systems over to them, but this can be a time-consuming and error-prone operation. A simpler
   	alternative is to perform a physical to virtual (P2V) migration to get these servers into a
   	virtualized server environment. Here we’ll discuss Hyper-V P2V conversion, as well as the storage
   	considerations around such a conversion.

  <title>Demartek Robocopy Multithread Presentation for RMWTUG March 2011 Meeting</title>
  <description>
    Robocopy (“robust file copy”), included with Windows operating systems, is a rich file copy utility
   	with many options. For this presentation we compared the results with and without the multithread
   	option: robocopy /MT. Using the multithread option in most cases results in faster or significantly
   	faster file copy operations than without the multithread option. View the presentation given at
   	the RMWTUG March 2011 meeting, which includes test results for local, 1GbE and 10GbE file copy operations.

  <title>Demartek Presents YouTube Video of QLogic-HP SSCM Software</title>
  <description>
   QLogic Corporation commissioned Demartek to evaluate the ease of installation and
   the ease of use of HP StorageWorks Simple SAN Connection Manager (SSCM) enterprise
   software that QLogic developed for HP as part of the HP StorageWorks H-series
   Fibre Channel switch portfolio. SSCM enterprise software provides a simple,
   wizard-based procedure to configure and manage Fibre Channel SAN agent components,
   including host bus adapters, Fibre Channel switches, and storage arrays. We found
   that the HP SSCM software handled all the nuances of Fibre Channel storage
   deployment in an automated fashion without manual intervention, and we were able
   to complete the process in approximately 15 minutes.

  <title>Demartek Presents YouTube Video of LSI FastPath Performance</title>
  <description>
   Solid state storage can be deployed directly as primary storage where the users
   decide what data to place on the storage, or it can be deployed as a cache in
   front of traditional storage, where the storage controller determines what data
   is placed on the SSS or solid state disk (SSD). Each implementation has advantages.
   LSI Corporation commissioned Demartek to evaluate MegaRAID FastPath software in
   a web server environment. FastPath software is a high-performance IO accelerator
   for SSD arrays connected to a MegaRAID controller card. FastPath is an optimized
   version of LSI’s MegaRAID technology that is designed with SSDs in mind, taking
   advantage of the increased read and write performance of SSDs. FastPath is used
   for primary storage where the user places files directly on the SSD devices. We
   achieved outstanding results in the web server environment using FastPath software.

  <title>Demartek Presents YouTube Video of LSI WarpDrive Performance</title>
  <description>
   LSI Corporation commissioned Demartek to evaluate their WarpDrive Acceleration Card, a solid state storage
   implementation that plugs into the PCI Express® (PCIe) bus in a server. The purpose of this evaluation was to
   compare the performance of a web server using WarpDrive for web content storage versus HDD. WarpDrive is able
   to provide 300GBs of storage and by interfacing to PCIe, more transactions per second and higher throughput
   can be supported compared to HDD. “We achieved tremendous web server performance, very quick response time and
   low power consumption with the LSI WarpDrive card,” said Dennis Martin, Demartek President. “We had to move to
   our 10GbE network to get the full performance of the WarpDrive, achieving more than 100 million web hits in 90
   minutes.”

  <title>Demartek Publishes Evaluation of QLogic-HP SSCM Software</title>
  <description>
    	There has been much confusion and discussion about the ease of installation and the ease of use of Fibre
			Channel storage. Some technology professionals, after looking at Fibre Channel storage technology, have decided
			that it is too complicated and have concluded that deploying iSCSI storage, running over Ethernet, would be
			simpler. Although Ethernet may be ubiquitous, many network administrators have little knowledge or experience
			managing storage. Basic storage management knowledge is needed to successfully manage storage regardless of the
			interface to the storage. QLogic Corporation commissioned Demartek to evaluate the ease of installation and the
			ease of use of HP Simple SAN Connection Manager (SSCM) software that QLogic developed for HP as part of the HP
			StorageWorks H-series Fibre Channel switch portfolio. SSCM provides a simple, wizard-based procedure to configure
			and manage Fibre Channel SAN agent components, including host bus adapters, Fibre Channel switches, and storage
			arrays. SSCM allows a complete Fibre Channel SAN to be deployed in minutes.

    	Dennis Martin, President of Demartek, spoke at the February 2011 Rocky Mountain Windows Technology User Group
    	(RMWTUG) meeting. In his presentation, Dennis provided an overview of the architectures and technologies of
    	solid state storage devices, including some of the physics of NAND flash and power consumption comparisons with
    	spinning hard disk drives. Dennis discussed the difference between deploying SSD technology as a cache and as
    	primary storage, highlighting the advantages of each deployment style. Dennis also shared how SSD technology
    	can move the bottleneck from storage to other areas of I.T. infrastructure. In the last part of this
    	presentation, Dennis included some of the recent results from his solid state storage performance testing of a
    	web server using Microsoft Server 2008 R2 and IIS 7.5 in the Demartek lab.

  <title>Demartek Publishes Evaluation of LSI WarpDrive Performance</title>
  <description>
    	When users have a choice of websites to do their business, providing acceptable response times is critical in retaining
    	customers. As the client base grows, the high demand for serving pages may cause users to experience slow page delivery.
    	To solve this problem, businesses may spread the web page demand across scores of systems each capable of providing web
    	pages. This report evaluates whether using solid state storage will allow fewer systems to be deployed.

  <title>Demartek Publishes Exchange Server 2003 vs 2007 vs 2010 I/O Comparison Summary</title>
  <description>
    	With Exchange Server 2010, Microsoft has again made several changes to the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) to increase
    	performance and reduce the frequency of reads and writes. Two of the major changes are to perform fewer, larger and
    	more sequential I/O operations and to increase the page size to 32KB. In order to eliminate confusion and provide a
    	side-by-side comparison of the estimated IOPS for Exchange Server 2003, 2007 and 2010, we have compiled the data provided
    	by Microsoft for each of the three versions of Exchange Server into a single table for comparison. We have also provided
    	some charts that help to visualize these differences.

   LSI Corporation commissioned Demartek to evaluate MegaRAID CacheCade software in a web server environment. CacheCade software
   is optimized to enhance read cache performance with features such as hot spot detection and retention. As the operating system
   makes read requests to a CacheCade-managed volume, the logical block is written to the SSS and subsequent read requests for this
   cached data are serviced by the SSS. Hot spot detection and retention ensures that only frequently accessed data is placed into

  <title>Demartek Publishes FCoE and iSCSI Performance Evaluation of Intel® Ethernet Server Adapter X520</title>
  <description>
   As the interest in converged networks grows, and as the vendors from the traditional Ethernet adapter and Fibre
   Channel adapter marketplaces produce converged products, questions arise about the capabilities and performance
   of each type of adapter. Intel commissioned Demartek to compare the performance of the their server adapter that
   supports Ethernet, Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and iSCSI protocols with those of the two leading Fibre
   Channel adapter vendors.

  <description>
   Demartek evaluated the Torridon disk storage test equipment from Quarch Technology, Ltd. in the Demartek lab. This
   equipment provides automated testing functions for storage arrays by managing and manipulating the individual control
   lines between disk controllers and individual disk drives. The Torridon system allows for full automation of insertion
   and removal of disk drives from a storage enclosure without physically having to remove or insert the drives. The
   Torridon system also allows virtually any error condition to be programmatically created and repeated, with precise
   timings for each of the signals on the interface.

  <title>Demartek Commentary: Do We Really Need a 50-page Disaster Recovery Plan?</title>
  <description>
   On the March 2, 2010 Wikibon Peer Incite public call, we discussed how virtualization and cloud
   computing are influencing business continuity (BC) and disaster recovery (DR). One of the themes
   that emerged during the call was the notion that virtualization and cloud computing, either
   together or separately, might allow us to streamline some or all of our DR processes and procedures...

  <title>Demartek Commentary: FCoE Technology Math Lesson</title>
  <description>
   	On the February 2, 2010 FCoE Fact vs. Fiction call, we discussed some of the potential technology advantages
   	of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). FCoE is the first major application to take advantage of the enhancements
   	to Ethernet described by Data Center Bridging (DCB), and this is being implemented on a 10GbE technology base.
   	Since we now have the possibility to converge LAN and SAN technology, let’s examine what can be done today
   	and begin to plan for the future...

  <title>Demartek Publishes Exchange Server 2003 vs 2007 I/O Comparison Summary</title>
  <description>
    	Microsoft made significant changes in moving from Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange Server 2007. The
    	primary change is that Exchange Server 2007 is a 64-bit application, which gives it much larger memory
    	addressability. This report provides a short I/O comparison summary of these changes.

  <title>Demartek Publishes Storage Networking Virtualization (IOV) Article</title>
  <description>
   	Dennis Martin, Demartek President, has written an article describing I/O Virtualization. Servers are virtualized,
   	storage is virtualized, but what about your storage network? New products now make it possible to pool and share
   	networking resources. Storage network virtualization, also known as I/O virtualization (IOV) or I/O consolidation,
   	comprises an emerging family of technologies that extend the concept of virtualization to the major types of input
   	and output (I/O) handled by today’s servers. Technologies discussed in this article include PCI Express, SR-IOV,
   	MR-IOV, Infiniband, 10GbE and others...

  <title>Demartek Publishes Evaluation of NetApp Ethernet Storage</title>
  <description>
   	Demartek evaluated NetApp’s native Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and Data Center Bridging (DCB)
   	storage solution for its flexibility and performance in satisfying multiple storage protocols.
   	NetApp introduced general availability in August 2009 of native Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)
   	and Data Center Bridging (DCB) connectivity with its FAS and V-Series storage systems. Via the same
   	10GbE unified target adapter (UTA), NetApp also began demonstrating publicly support of FCoE, iSCSI,
   	NFS and CIFS over a single port, with general availability planned in 2010. This report primarily
   	focuses on the FCoE implementation of the NetApp storage solution, with some look at iSCSI and other
   	Ethernet storage protocols in a 10-Gigabit Enhanced Ethernet environment.

  <title>Demartek Publishes Updated Identity Theft Prevention Tips and Commentary Report</title>
  <description>
  	Identity theft, also known as “ID theft” and “identity fraud,” is a widespread and fast-growing crime.
  	Although potentially anybody can be targeted, there are a number of things that can be done to reduce the
  	risk of becoming an identity theft victim. The recent well-publicized security breaches, ruin of financial
  	reputations and even mistaken arrests of victims have triggered calls to action by individuals, businesses
  	and government. The updated Demartek Identity Theft Prevention report lists suggestions for individuals and
  	organizations to help reduce the risk of identity theft. The areas covered include the handling of paper
  	documents, telephone-related issues, computer-related issues, credit freezes, and the Identity Theft Passport
  	programs. This report also provides references from government agencies for information and assistance and
  	discusses some current and proposed laws. Information specific to the USA and Canada is included.

  <title>Demartek Comments on Emulex HBA Encryption Strategy</title>
  <description>
   	Emulex’s strategic direction is to help IT shops provide additional data protection and privacy by
   	encrypting data at the source - in the host server. There has been plenty of news about data breaches
   	and literally millions of data records at risk, and some of the laws requiring public disclosure of
   	data breaches. More recently, some states within the USA have passed laws requiring encryption for
   	transmission or storage of personally identifiable information outside of a secure system. CIOs can
   	no longer debate about whether to encrypt. Encryption is no longer an option, but a requirement...

  <title>Demartek Publishes Evaluation of IBM and HP 6-Gbps SAS/SATA RAID Controllers</title>
  <description>
   	With increasing demands on storage in popular application servers, the server manufacturers have begun to
   	provide 6-Gbit/sec (Gbps) SAS RAID controllers as the standard RAID controllers. It is useful to understand
   	how well these controllers work under sustained heavy loads, especially in real-world workload situations.
   	With this purpose in mind, IBM commissioned Demartek to test their standard 6-Gbps SAS RAID controller in
   	one of their popular servers and compare its performance to the standard 6-Gbps SAS RAID controller provided
   	by Hewlett Packard (HP) in one of their equivalent popular servers.

  <title>Demartek Publishes EMC EmailXtender User Directed Archiving White Paper</title>
  <description>For a growing number of organizations, email archiving solutions have become an ideal and
    recommended way to retain and ensure access to corporate records that are created, transmitted
    and stored in email systems. These email archiving solutions enhance a company’s ability to
    comply with regulatory and internal standards for data retention and the ability to find data
    when needed, either for internal use or for legal discovery. However, individual users find
    some centrally-managed email archiving solutions too rigid to adapt to individual or departmental
    needs. Some users prefer the flexibility they previously enjoyed with storing email in local PST
    or NSF files. An email archiving solution that can provide the right balance of user flexibility
    and familiar experience with centrally-managed email archiving functions can be a great advantage
    to an organization. This white paper examines the new User Directed Archiving functions of EMC
    EmailXtender and its blend of user-organized folders with central email archiving management.

   Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) in the VMware ESX Server environment, and compare this performance
   to the equivalent QLogic HBA. Storage performance characteristics and implementation details
   are different when running in virtual environments such as VMware with guest operating systems
   as compared to running a native operating system on a server. Emulex sought an independent
   view of its Fibre Channel HBA performance in a VMware environment. This report shows the
   results in a four virtual machine environment.
